Major drawing upgrades, custom keyboard shortcuts and a redesigned archive
Piston 9.9 is a big update for drawing, with improvements to the player and archives alongside it.
✏️ Drawings
- Redesigned Drawing Archive and Session Drawings List. Both now follow the same layout as the Cuts List.
- Star and filter drawings. Mark drawings as favourites and filter by starred items. The star icon now has a white border so it is easier to see in the Drawings and Cuts lists.
- New Arrow tool. Draw multiple lines and arrows without reselecting the tool each time.
- Stroke width and opacity. Adjust both for the free drawing tool.
- Remembers your last choices. The Drawings toolbar keeps the last colour and tool you used.
- Preset drawings. Save drawings to reuse later, ideal for fixed-camera setups such as pitch markings or pool lanes.
- Save a screenshot. The new Save icon captures the video with your drawings on top. Saved images appear in the Session Drawings List and the Drawings Archive.
- Draw on live sessions. In live and server sessions, tapping the Drawings icon lets you draw directly over the video instead of taking you to the Drawings page.
- Keep Drawing After Resuming Play. A new setting. It is off by default, so drawings clear when playback resumes.
- Drawings keep their position. They stay in place when you open sidebars or rotate the device, and adjust automatically to the aspect ratio.
- Tidier line and arrow handles. Anchor points are hidden until you double-tap the object, matching other shapes.
- Magnifying Glass removed from live sessions and Cuts. It is still available in Saved Drawings.
- Safer typing. Keyboard playback shortcuts are switched off while you type in a drawing text box.
⌨️ Player
- Custom keyboard shortcuts. A new Keyboard Shortcuts panel in the Session Player and Clip Player lets you create your own hotkeys for player controls.
- Jump in 5-second steps. When paused, hold Option and press an arrow key to jump forward or back 5 seconds.
🔨 Improved
- Archive lists use a long-press menu. Swipe to Share has been replaced by a long-press menu, in line with current Apple interaction patterns.
🐛 Fixed
- Open Ended Markers that start and end at the same time now send an end time to the server.
- Exiting full screen in the Cuts Player no longer opens a non-existent right-hand sidebar.
- After losing and regaining the server connection, the New Session button is restored.
- Background session checks are much more reliable, preventing random server logouts.
